John Frusciante’s Second Coming

13:22:22 CET | Viewed 795 times | Comments Off

This was kindly lifted from Undercover and written by Paul Cashmere.

The second album in John Frusciante’s mammoth five album series will be released on August 10. The second album in the series ‘Automatic Writing’ will be released under the name Ataxia. It comes just two months after ‘The Will To Death’ was released in June by the Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist. Ataxia is a collaboration with Josh Klinghoffer (Bicycle Theif) and Joe Lally (Fugazi). “I became friends with the members of Fugazi in Spring of 1999,” John said in a statement. “They were my favorite band in the world and I was going to see them play live as much as possible. I am lucky to have seen them as much as I have. They have had a hugely positive effect on me, both as a musician and as a person. Joe Lally moved to LA from DC in October of last year. Josh Klinghoffer and I had done two experimental electronic shows here in LA at the Knitting Factory, both of which Joe had attended. We scheduled two more shows, thinking we would play songs off the at that time unreleased “The Will To Death” and soon to be released “Shadows Collide With People.” We asked Joe if he would play bass for us, to which he said yes. But I started to realize, very much in the spirit of that period of time, that I was not interested in repeating things I had done, but wished to do things that were new”.

Ataxia is different to his previous solo work and his work with the Chili Peppers. “This record marks the first time I am extensively using the synthesizer in a way that has nothing to do with 80’s synthesizer sounds” he says. “I am using it to treat the vocals, the drums etc. as well as to make noise that has more to do with feedback and computer noise music (like Pita) than with anything people normally associate with the synthesizer. As I said in my bio for “The Will To Death,” I am drawing inspiration for how to approach my modular synthesizer from music that has no synthesizer, such as The Velvet Underground and Max Neuhaus, as well as synthesizer music that has no relationship to the way synths are used in pop music, such as Iaanis Xenakis and David Tudor”.

The third in the series of five records is DC EP, produced by Ian MacKaye. It will come out on September 14. Also this month, Red Hot Chili Peppers Live at Hyde Park featuring John will be released in territories outside the United States.

RHCP set world record

16:36:56 CET | Viewed 786 times | Comments Off

Thanks to xfm.co.uk and Universally Speaking…

The Red Hot Chili Peppers’ recent shows at Hyde Park in London set a new world record as the highest grossing concert event at a single venue in music history, bringing in an astonishing $17 million.

The three shows (June 19, 20 and 25) sold out within hours of going on sale, had a paying audience of 258,000 punters, bringing in $17,187,234 (approximately 9,115,282) setting a new world record.

The Bonnaroo Music Festival in Nashville had previously held the record, with a gross of approximately $14.5 million, but the Clear Channel Entertainment UK promoted and produced RHCP shows, blew the competition out of the water.

“It blew our minds,” CCE Europe president Michael Rapino said to Reuters, “The first show sold out in a couple of hours, then we put up a second show and it went clean just as quickly. I think we could’ve done another two or even three,” he explained, if the venue had been available.

The band also sold out three other huge capacity events Manchester (58,000), Cardiff (61,000) and Edinburgh (50,000). “And we could’ve sold more,” Rapino says, “The Red Hot Chili Peppers are an incredibly huge band in Europe.”

Rapino went on to explain that while there has been a drop off in interest in US festivals (most obviously the cancelled Lollapalooza event) the European concert market is still going strong, saying.

“We’re still going to have growth this year, which is amazing. David Bowie, Madonna, Sting, Britney Spears and others have done well in Europe in 2004, and festivals like Download and the Isle of Wight are also strong.

“We’ve had a few slow shows here and there, but we haven’t felt anywhere near the pain of US markets. We haven’t seen that same level of drop-off.”

As previously reported The Chili Peppers will be releasing their first ever live album ‘Live In Hyde Park’ in August which will only be released in Europe, Australia, Japan and New Zealand (not the US).

Despite the exceptionally fast production process of under one month, we are endeavouring to bring you the final tracklisting and release dates by the end of this week.

One teaser fact we can tell you already however: To round up the outdoor summer night magix fix, the “Live At Hyde Park” double CD will come with a magnificent photo booklet featuring live as well as behind the scenes imagery, including a spectacular heli shot panning the whole of London with Hyde Park and all its audience.

“Live At Hyde Park” will be released in Europe, Australia, Japan and New Zealand only.
