Some video lessons in Total Guitar, January 2008 issue

19:22:44 CET | Viewed 907 times | 1 comment

Total Guitar, January 2008 CD coverThere’s some RHCP and John in this month’s issue of Total Guitar (the one with Dave Grohl on the cover), as the CD with a photo of John on its cover is attached to the magazine. There’s nothing in the magazine itself, so put the CD in your computer, wait for it to load, then when the menu appears, go to video licks, to access tutorials on riffs for four of the five Stadium Arcadium singles (Dani California, Tell Me Baby, Snow and Hump De Bump) as well as the title track. The files are in lower quality .flv format and, just to make it clear, although John is on the cover of the CD, the instructor is some person picked by TG staff (demagogy…).

P.S. If you just want to see the CD cover in a normal size, click here

A nice and helpful article in Guitarist, January 2008 issue

Guitarist, January 2008

There is a nice feature on John’s playing in the Learn section of the January 2008 issue of Guitarist magazine, with tabs for If You Have To Ask, the track which the music editor of the magazine, Jason Sidwell, recommends for “studying funky stylings of one of the world’s biggest bands. Click on the thumbnail or here to look at the scans. Be sure to buy the magazine, as this is included on the CD that comes with it as well. For more info on where to purchase the magazine, head over to guitarist.co.uk

September/October 2007 issue of Tape Op magazine

22:34:51 CET | Viewed 909 times | Comments Off

(thanks Maggie!)

Tape Op independent magazine will have a John feature in their September/October issue, the scans of which are not on their website yet.

I reckon the article would be very interesting to read, as it contains information on John’s next solo album where Flea and Josh Klinghoffer will also be featured; and Ryan Hewitt is being interviewed as well. Also, someone from the Tape Op community quotted that John is actually making a reference to a back issue of the magazine.

Does anyone here have a subscription to that magazine? It’s an independent one and the subscriptions are free, but available to people who record music only.

Total Guitar, July 2007

20:29:17 CET | Viewed 833 times | Comments Off

If you hurry up and especially if you don’t live in UK, chances are you’ll still be able to grab the July issue of Total Guitar, with tabs to Californication. Sorry that this was not posted in July, apparently, none of the I-M.net scouts from UK knew it.

Luckily, I found this magazine in a shop here in Serbia today and scanned the tabs, so you can view them here. I apologise for the weird line on each scan, I think it’s time for me to get a new scanner. This is the second scanner that has died because of the material for this site, weird enough.

Guitar, July 2007John is on the cover of this month’s Guitar magazine (Germany) and there’s a whole special about Red Hot Chili Peppers inside. The magazine’s website is under this link and it would be very nice if someone could provide scans of this, translate, send in the magazine, or, well…any of those.

Rolling Stone article excerpt

19:04:49 CET | Viewed 1,355 times | 1 comment

The interview excerpt, originally on the page 4 of the cover story preview

When the intellectual part of guitar playing overrides the spiritual, you don’t get to extreme heights,” says John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Then he gives an example of how high he gets with six strings and electricity: his hair-raising solo on a recent Chili Peppers B side, “Lyon 6.06.06,” recorded live in France last year. “I remember my brain completely going off. The energy flows to such a degree that there’s no reason to think.” But Frusciante, who turns thirty-seven on March 5th, is also one of the most advanced technical guitarists in rock, a vibrant, chameleonic stylist whose melodic precision and invention were pivotal on the Chili Peppers’ commercial breakthrough, 1991’s BloodSugarSexMagik. Born in New York and raised in Southern California, Frusciante obsessively practiced guitar in his bedroom, playing along to records, until he joined the Chili Peppers in 1989, replacing the late Hillel Slovak. Frusciante abruptly quit in 1992, beginning a seven-year descent into drug-fueled isolation. But since his return for 1999’s Californication, Frusciante’s early fusion of punk energy and the exploratory grandeur of Jimi Hendrix has bloomed into a colorful, explosive originality that is all over the Chili Peppers’ recent double album, Stadium Arcadium.

Who are your guitar heroes?
I always felt it was limiting to stick with guitarists for your inspiration. I also draw inspiration from what you might call guitar anti-heroes — people with an originality that goes beyond the guitar-hero aesthetic.

OK, who are your anti-heroes?
Lou Reed and Sterling Morrison of the Velvet Underground. In the Seventies, Keith Levene of Public Image, Ltd. and John McGeoch of Magazine invented interesting styles. I’m a big fan of Matthew Ashman of Bow Wow Wow. I have nothing against flash. But I grew up in a time when heroism and flashiness were overtaking the desire to make beautiful music. Kurt Cobain took guitar playing further than anyone with way more technique had done in a while.
