John did it again…

23:36:36 CET | Viewed 568 times | 1 comment

…he performed with The Mars Volta, that is. Here’s a short “report”, as said by Sandra from the RHCP BBS.

John played with the Mars Volta again last night in Santa Barbara during L’Via again, and this was the most insane L’Via they’ve ever played. If a recording surfaces soon, everyone should get it and listen to it. Usually at the end of L’Via, a four-way solo happens between Ikey (keyboards), Omar, John, and Adrian (sax/flute/misc. percussion, but on this song, he does a flute solo). So the first round went as usual. On the second round, Omar started his solo but then John joined him. They were going crazy together and then Jon (drummer) kicks in and all three of them go absolutely MAD!! It was the most incredible, incredible L’Via jam I’ve ever witnessed. It was longer than the “solo” was supposed to be so Adrian was left waiting, but after a while, he finished the song. It was so beautiful!! Most incredible L’Via performance ever.

Throughout the show, John was dancing on the side and having fun, watching them and smiling and having a good time. It was great to see him play with the Mars Volta again. His hair is so long! (just had to throw that in there, haha!) And he used his red guitar again.

I will do my best to try and hook you guys up with some media from the show. The server this website is on is having major problems, so that might be later…

A rumour and a recommendation

16:31:12 CET | Viewed 466 times | Comments Off

A rumour
Here’s a question Dave Navarro responded to on his blog:
Q: Do you think there’s ever a chance John Frusciante will join Camp Freddy onstage sometime?
A: I literally spoke to him last week and asked if he would do one. He said he’d for sure do it. My hopes are for the October Vanity Fair show.

So, there goes the story that them two don’t like each other, it seems. This promises an interesting and probably unexpected collaboration. John’s name is still not on the list of people who have joined/will join Camp Freddy onstage, but having seen this, it will probably be there soon.
Many thanks to Christina for having found out about this:)

A recommendation:
There’s a very nice interview with John in the spring 2005 issue of Skyscraper Magazine, with some beautiful photos included. The magazine costs 5 US dollars and it can be ordered here, here or, according to the website, found in “most independent record stores, Tower Records, Borders, Virgin, Barnes & Noble, Books A Million, and regional chain stores”.

And I would HIGHLY APPRECIATE AND BE VERY THANKFUL if someone could send me a copy of that magazine or at least decent, normal-sized scans of photos from the article. I would get you something nice in return:)

John and TMV together on stage…again

23:54:25 CET | Viewed 415 times | Comments Off

This was happening before. John was with TMV during almost all of their set when they opened for SOAD in Long Beach Arena. Here are the first reviews of the show.

Opening for System at the sold-out Long Beach Arena in California were fellow guitar-heavy, counter-culture rockers the Mars Volta, who provided a far more visual show with oversized psychedelic projections. Guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez was in fine form after recovering from a stomach ailment that forced the band to cancel its European tour dates earlier this year. And while rumors of an onstage collaboration between Rodriguez-Lopez and System frontman Serj Tankian proved to be just that, Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante surprised the audience by guesting on nearly the entire Mars Volta set.

While System continue to take more risks onstage, the band is doing the same with its business decisions, the big one this fall being the invitation to the Mars Volta to open the tour (see “System Of A Down/ Mars Volta Tour Dates Announced”). “They make great music,” Malakian said backstage. “It’s that simple.”

Well, not exactly. While both bands have been dubbed leaders of a new progressive-rock movement, System are still a metal band at heart, while the Mars Volta are more of a psychedelic jam band.

During its hour-long opening set — which was about two hours less than the group’s typical show — the eight-piece band performed four numbers: the five-minute, crowd-pleasing single “The Widow,” and three obviously extended jams, two from Frances the Mute and one from De-Loused in the Comatorium. For one of the epics, Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante strolled onstage unannounced and joined Omar Rodriguez-Lopez for a spellbinding guitar trip.

Singer Cedric Bixler Zavala only addressed the audience once (”Take care of each other out there,” he said. “I don’t want to see any testicles flying in the air”), but made up for it with his dead-on vocal performance throughout the Mars Volta’s show. It might not be the most accessible voice in rock, but it could be the most powerful.

If anyone was lucky enough to be there, your reviews would be much appreciated. Thanks:)

John played with The Mars Volta last night in LA!

22:50:43 CET | Viewed 600 times | 1 comment

As we all know, surprises are never ending…unfortunately, only for people living in the LA area and eventually UK, but yeah, OK, it’s nice to at least know that such things are happening.

In short, John played with The Mars Volta yesterday in Los Angeles. Here’s a Reuters’ report on the event:

Concert review: The Mars Volta
(Reuters, Monday June 6)
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - The Mars Volta thrives on the unorthodox, and traditional musical hooks are almost incidental. When the group encountered tuning difficulties during its show Saturday night at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, vocalist Cedric Bixler-Zavala made one of his few comments from the stage: “I think this is God’s way of telling us to write regular songs.”

Since its formation in El Paso, Texas, four years ago, the band has steadily amassed a loyal following, large enough to pack the outdoor venue. Billed as “An Evening With the Mars Volta,” the two-hour-plus performance was filled with flashes of brilliance and cacophonous high-volume excess.

The Mars Volta juggernaut sound draws much inspiration from Led Zeppelin at its most thunderous. But also evident was the mid-’70s polyrhythmic progressive rock of King Crimson, as well as tidal waves of Latin rhythms set askew. The group also attempted to emulate the most impressionistic jazz methods of Miles Davis and Ornette Coleman.

Rumour…

1:53:25 CET | Viewed 516 times | 2 comments

A couple of online sites have announced that there will be the *second* ATP festival this year, from 2nd to 4th December, held at the same place as the first one, that The Mars Volta are the curators and therefore that John might be a part of the line up.

None of these is confirmed for now, but stay tuned and watch this space…when there’s smoke, there’s fire.
