To Record Only Water For Ten Days

TROWFTD front coverThe journey begins with a step inside - that was the text of a tagline for John’s third solo album, released in February 2001 and followed by a short tour around a couple of cities in USA and Europe, as well as Toronto in Canada. John started working on this masterpiece affter he’d cleaned-up and rejoined Red Hot Chili Peppers; and he recorded it after the Californication tour. The most of the songs were written during the tour itself and this time, he was recording the album on an 8-track digital recorder, unlike his first two solo projects. And once again, just like on his first two full-length relases, he’s the only musician on the album. The feeling of a home-made record is still there, though it’s much more polished than the previous two albums and the songs have been spiced-up with a drum machine, which would be replaced by real drums on his 2004 releases. Also, this album is unlike the first two, rather floating in the waters of electro-pop than alternative and/or modern rock. The influence of 80s’ new wave is clearly visible, but that’s probably what makes this record so unique. Once again, the lyrical genius is present and the last song, Moments Have You could easily be mistaken for a poem. The album opener, Going Inside was released as a single, the B side of which features three more songs from this period of time and many other songs from 1998-2001 era ended on an internet album a couple of months after TROWFTD’s release. However, the best among them did surface the light of the day the normal way, through this fifteen-song Odyssey through the spiritual world. So, what are you waiting for? Take a deep breath and dive into the purity, reflections and lessons learned. Levitate and feel the ground get closer, as John said in the song that inspired the creation of and gave the name to this website. (© 2004)

NOTE: All the songs’ lyrics on the album were written by John Frusciante and are © 2000 Niandra LaDes Music/BMI. This is the official lyrics from the album’s booklet. I only made a couple of tiny corrections on the places where John has obviously altered the “official” lyrics, added the repeating lines and backing/harmony vocals for your convenience.

Trivia

  • This album was recorded on an 8-track digital recorder and John is the only musician.
  • The most of the songs from this albums have been played live during a mini-tour John had in 2001.
  • Going Inside was released as a single and the video for that song was the only John video which made it to the TV and therefore the only “official” video.
  • There are 14 other videos, one for each of the songs except for the bonus track and all of those videos, as well as the first one, were recorded by Vincent Gallo. They’re not being shown on TV and it’s very hard to find the most of them on the net and when you manage to find any of them, their quality is bad.
  • This is the only John’s solo-album the booklet of which does not feature his famous handwriting.
  • Song Remain was featured in the TV show “24″.
  • Five songs from this period of time didn’t make it to the album and they leaked on the internet a couple of years later.
