Saturday question #39: YOUR top 5 replacement band members

This Saturday question was, obviously, inspired by the internet find from the other day; where the article's author listed his top 5 replacement band members - replacement, as in "they were not in the band's initial line-up and then they came around and made the band better/managed to fit in". Obviously, John's a replacement band member himself; but there are many others, so it's an interesting thing to discuss...and finally, a new Saturday question for those who like to discuss music only.

So, spil it out, give us all YOUR top 5 replacement band members!

For those who don't know: Saturday questions are a weekly meme on Invisible Movement where the site visitors get their own say. The questions are of a broad range, some of them are directly connected to the site subject and music, some are wonderfully irrelevant and some are very random. This is just a little way for everyone to interact, especially when it comes to people who don't visit the forum.

  1. Allen says:

    5. Jack Irons in Pearl Jam.sure he got replaced by the guy he replaced in the first place (if that makes sense) but he still rules and of course he was a pepper so I couldnt miss him out.

    4. Dave in the peppers. Of course he got replaced also by the guy he replaced but none the less to step into John’s shoes is no easy feat.

    3. Rob from Metallica-Awesome bassist who fits in well with the band which seems like a pretty hard thing to do.

    2. All members of Guns N Roses besides Axl- Since Axl is the only remaining original member I thought id mention the rest of the band for putting up with him for so long :)

    1. JOHN ANTHONY M######F###### FRUSCIANTE !!! (sorry if that was predictable :/)

  2. shalhevet says:

    my top 5 are:

no.5: dave navarro- replaced john frusciante in 1993-1998

no.4:flea- he replaced eric evary on the jane’s addiction tour back in the 90’s.

no.3: taylor hawkins who replaced william goldsmith on the foo fighters

no.2:chad smith- replaced jack irons on 1988

and no.1: JOHN FRUSCIANTE! ( no need to say more)

  3. Caleb says:

    5. Chad Smith. The Chili Peppers reliable drummer! lol.
    4. Arnel Pineda is doing a great job taking over Steve Perry’s job in Journey.
    3. I agree with Taylor Hawkins replacing William Goldsmith. Taylor Hawkins is a beast.
    2. Neil Peart (replaced John Rutsey in Rush. Rutsey was on the debut album. I mean c’mon, Neil Peart made Rush what Rush is!)
    1. John Frusciante (Self-explanatory)

  4. styro says:

    5. Justin Chancellor, Tool bassist (replaced Paul D’Amour)
    4. Chad Smith
    3. Slash (Replaced Tracii Guns in GnR)
    2. Neil Peart (what Caleb said)
    1. John Frusciante (well of course)

  5. Alex says:

    5. Cliff Martinez – Replaced Jack Irons, and my favourite Chili Pepper drummer after Chad
    4. Roger O’Donnell – Keyboardist who replaced Lol Tolhurst in The Cure
    3. Simon Gallup – Replaced The Cure’s original bassist
    2. Robert Smith – Replaced John McGeogh in Siouxsie & The Banshess (and that’s one hell of a task)
    1. JF (obviously)

  6. Nadia says:

I agree with Allen’s list up there… 100%. Great choices! Although Jason Newsted was a pretty good replacement for Cliff Burton as well. Guy played his heart out on stage.

  7. chickenbot says:

    5. Juan Alderete De la Pena (mars volta bassist) to replace FLEA requires some big shoes to fill, and he did it exceptionally well
    4. Henry Rollins (black flag) honestly they were nothing without him. keith morris was good to, but henry is just awesome
    3. Roger Waters (pink floyd) Syd Barrett was something else and to be able to replace him says a lot
    2. Dave Grohl (replaced chad in Nirvana). great addition,
    1. John Anthony motherfucking Frusciante. come on now, when in rock history have you seen a band flourish as much as they have with a replacement, go to nothing without him, and reach the top again with him

  8. behnood says:

5- Al Pitrelli (Megadeth): Marty Friedman is ever-missed, but just listen to one song (Dread and the Fugitive Mind) to find out about an asset replacement in name of Al.
4- Kirk Hammet (Metallica): although he may never be as great as Dave Mustaine, but he was the deserved successor to the master of speed.
3- Robert Trujillo (Metallica): This man is wild…Jason left, but Metallica did not feel the loss.
2- Chad Smith (RHCP): recently voted by music radar as the 6th greates drummer of all time from among 50 of the best and ahead of the likes of Ulrich. what else left to say?
    1. John Anthony M.F creative celestial mastermind Frusciante: Oh, words do not suffice for his description cause a man of pure emotions can’t be defined through terminolgies.Had Hilel gotten the chance to meet him, he would have definitely seceded to let John in (a lil bit exagerrative ;-) ).

  9. Nick says:

    5. Dave Grohl entering Nirvana
    4. Tre Cool replacing Green Days first drummer
    3. Chad Smith joining the Chili Peppers
    2. David Gilmour replacing Syd Barret
    1. John Frusciante replacing Dave Navarro
