Chad Smith on RHCP regrouping, demos up to 10 years old and John
In a recent lengthy interview with MusicRadar; Chad Smith spoke about his Meatbeats, Chickenfoot and, of course, the future of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Joe Bosso, who interviewed both him and John during 2008; asked a question about all *four* band members coming back into the studio, very explicitely.
Do you have any demos written?
"There's ideas floating around. One of them dates back to 1999, I think. Flea, Anthony and I did jam recently. That felt good. But as far as demos go, we'll just start writing in October."What about John Frusciante? He's the one guy who's always been in question. In fact, earlier this year he told me that he had "no plans" to do anything with the Chili Peppers.
"I know he said that. Like all of us, he was coming out of a real Chili Peppers pressure-cooker. I'll be honest: I haven't seen John, but Flea had a sit-down with him recently, and from what I understand it was very positive. I have every reason to believe that, come October, we'll all four be making music again as the Chili Peppers. John's a very important component of the band. I love the guy. He's an incredible musician."
Minor news items on RHCP recording again also appeared in 93x rocks!, Music Vixen, MOG and 411 Mania.
For everyone who didn't take this seriously, just a little hint-hint because a little bird told me so: more in September. Should calm down everyone who's still paranoid.
*Many thanks to Erik for the heads-up.
UPDATE: Here's another interview with Chad Smith, which also appeared in the Spin magazine.
ANOTHER UPDATE:
The article is in Performing Musician Issue 23 August 2009. Chad concludes the interview saying:
"I think that at the end of September of this year we'll get back together and start writing songs. Flea and I jam, and I see Anthony, who lives down the road from me. We're still hanging out and see each other and stuff, but it's just time to do other things and live your life, and then come back and have a nice fresh outlook on things."
(thanks to rtaylor89 from the RHCP BBS)

Chad’s been pretty busy lately, I wonder if the “recent” jam he had with Anthony and Flea was for the MusiCares show back in May?!
The news all sounds really positive, but it’s pretty funny that MOG couldn’t find a more recent photo for their story than one from the 80’s when neither John nor Chad were in the band!!
I just hope is John will not join the band again under pressure and against his will.
In this case, I would prefer the end of RHCP and a new solo album with the people he wants to be on.
Kinda worries me that john wasnt involved in this jam but hopefully sue was right about it just being the MusiCares show, i guess its best to take everything at face value, and john did say in the article he hadn’t quit, interested to hear this news in september
I don’t think they should give a specific time to go back into the studio, because John will do things when the time is right for him. I don’t think his break has been long enough because after all that time touring with the Peppers, John jumped right into his solo stuff, so I don’t think John will be ready by October. I think the rest of RHCP should just follow John’s lead when it comes to making more songs together. He is a crucial member of the band, and if his heart is not in it, we will definitely know.
Yeah, but if John doesn’t “have it in his heart” to do stuff with the Peppers, he should be consequential and just quit. I mean, after all, a band is team work, and in case (!) John does hesitate, I don’t think it’s fair for the rest of the band to wait for the “diva” to be able to do what they love doing.
Not saying that’s the case, just generally speaking, really.
awesome, thanks for the news.
love this pic, where’s it from?
just a heads up, spin just put up a similar article http://www.spin.com/articles/qa-red-hot-chili-pepper-chad-smith
